Let’s start by looking at why the high-quality recliner you buy today is so much better than the one you would have purchased 20 years ago—what we’ll call the “traditional recliner.” The advances can be grouped into five categories:

Traditional recliners looked big, bulky, and overstuffed. It seems that the designers wanted you to feel like you were sinking into a cloud as you took your seat. They also have more variety in the types of wood and metal used, the base style, etc., making it easier to find the right chair for your decor.
5. Scale and Footprint
As noted, traditional recliners were typically super-sized pieces that took up a lot of space, especially when reclined. Modern recliners still need room to recline, of course, but they tend to have a much smaller footprint in the upright position and a less imposing feel in a room.
